Kathryn Carter, Fellow
L.O. Donald Leadership Academy

Kathryn Carter is principal of L.O. Donald Leadership Academy in Dallas Independent School District. Under her leadership, the school has moved from the bottom 15% in the state to the top 25% for student achievement and student progress. In her 25 years in education, she has served as a teacher, instructional specialist, coach, and administrator. Recognized by her district as a Master principal, Kathryn knows the quality of the relationships between teachers, students, parents, and administrators drives student learning. She has served on district level committees and focus groups including the Superintendent’s Principals’ Group. Kathryn is most proud that her faculty and staff bring their own children to her school. She earned her BA in History at the University of Oklahoma and her master’s in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at the University of Texas in Arlington. Kathryn has two grown children, Dylan and Alexana, who both attended Dallas ISD schools. She loves rescue dogs and exploring our National Parks with her husband, Brett.

Orlanda Swain is a highly skilled and devoted educational leader who is committed to the development of learners at L. O. Donald Leadership Academy. She has worked for Dallas ISD for 14 years. Orlanda is currently rated as an Exemplary Teacher under TEA state designation. While taking on many leadership roles such as SEL campus expert, Campus TEI Expert, member of the Innovation Team, her passion remains to develop meaningful relationships with staff and students to enhance collaboration. Orlanda earned her BS in education at Paul Quinn College in Dallas, TX. She later received her master’s in Education Administration at the University of North Texas. Orlanda is married with two adult children. She spends her free time with family and traveling.
