Carland Washington is the principal of West Prep Academy, a middle school in the New York City Department of Education. Carland attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina Central University for his undergraduate degree and teaching certifications. He is a graduate of the Summer Principals Academy and holds a master’s degree in Education Leadership from Teachers College, Columbia University where he also serves as an internship coach for feature leaders in education. He is the co-author of “Authenticity and the Female African American School Leader” published in the edited book, Racially and Ethnically Diverse Women Leading Education. Carland frequently serves as a panelist for selected topics in education such as race and diversity, social and emotional development, closing the achievement gap, and has been featured in Time Magazine for his work in wellness education.

Tunisia Bristol, Ally

Tunisia Bristol, a product of the New York City public school system, understands the need of building authentic experiences and the impact of effective instructional practices. An avid STEMinist, Tunisia has spent the past decade advocating and bringing rich STEM experiences to diverse New York City middle schoolers. She currently serves as the Special Education Liaison and teaches 6th-grade science at West Prep Academy. Supporting the growth of students and educators alike is at the forefront of Tunisia’s professional and personal quest. Crediting targeted coaching to her own practice, she is passionate about the progressive development of pedagogues and has collaborated with programs, such as Teaching Residents @ Teachers College, NYC Teaching Fellows, and NYC Teaching Collaborative. Tunisia Bristol is a graduate of Cornell University (B.S in Human Development), Teachers College, Columbia University (M.S in Intellectual Disabilities/Autism), and a Leaders in Education Apprenticeship Program (LEAP) apprentice via Bank Street College (M.S in Educational Leadership).
